nobody cared about Helen

Nobody Cared About Helen is a full-length dance performance exploring force as a structuring principle that shapes bodies, speech, and social order. Drawing on the Iliad, Homer’s ancient Greek epic of the Trojan War, as well as on the French philosopher Simone Weil’s reading of it, The Iliad, or the Poem of Force, the piece forms a landscape in which force acts within human relations almost as a tangible material, capable of transforming one’s whole being. It traces the extended effects of force as it migrates far beyond the battlefield and into everyday life.

Reflecting on the storylines of figures from Greek tragedy, the piece works to collapse the comfortable distance between mythological narratives and contemporary life, tracing resonances between canonical stories and the social, political and intimate structures of the present.

The performers of Nobody Cared About Helen fill this landscape with owned and borrowed identities, haunted by an absent figure in whose name, supposedly, a war is fought.

Intertwining language and movement into a porous storytelling of truth and tale, the piece examines power relations not only on a physical level, but also between speech and live action. It raises questions of authorship, narrative framing and the perception of “truth.”
